As migrant encounters continue to break records, the Democratic mayors of three major sanctuary cities are begging for help as they struggle to keep up with the influx.
Speaking at a recent conference, New York City Mayor Eric Adams called for a declaration of emergency, stating: “As temperatures drop in New York City, Chicago, Denver and other impacted cities, we are calling for the federal declaration of emergency, financial support and a national resettlement strategy.”
He added: “We cannot allow buses with people needing our help to arrive without warning at any hour of day and night.”
He made his comments at a virtual news conference with the mayor of Denver, Mike Johnston, and the mayor of Chicago, Brandon Johnson, during which the three leaders warned their cities were reaching their breaking points as a result of the continued influx of illegals being bussed there from the nation’s southern border. They labeled the situation a “humanitarian crisis” and asked for assistance from all levels of government.
Adams recently issued an executive order asking charter bus companies to give the city a 32-hour notice when migrants are headed there. His office reports that during the last two weeks alone, more than 7,000 illegal immigrants have entered their intake system. Since late spring, they estimate that more than 157,000 illegals have made their way to the city.
In Denver, Mayor Johnston discussed the burden of the high volume of illegals, noting: “We, at this point now, have had more migrant arrivals in our city than any city in America per capita.” His claims are unsubstantiated though.
He also complained about how the situation is affecting his city’s finances, saying: “We’re looking at about $160 million of potential costs going into next year’s budget. That’s almost 10% of our entire city budget. That’s a massive impact for us.”
Chicago is experiencing a similar problem, and the city appears to be changing its tune from originally welcoming illegals. Mayor Johnson said: “We have reached a critical point in this mission that absent real, significant intervention immediately, our local economies are not designed and built to respond to this type of crisis.”
“We are literally building a system as we go along,” he added.
The coalition of mayors has asked for $5 billion in assistance form the federal government in the past to deal with the crisis. The mayors are placing the blame for the situation on Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who they claim has been trying to “use asylum seekers as political pawns.”
Abbott has bused tens of thousands of migrants to these cities since last year as his state tries to manage the influx. He says that he is only transporting migrants to cities that have proclaimed their “sanctuary” status to take pressure off of overwhelmed border communities.
A spokesperson for Abbott, Renae Eze, said: “The hypocrisy of Mayor Adams is astounding. Mayor Adams had touted New York City’s self-declared sanctuary city status, then sent his own buses of migrants out to small towns in New York. Texas has only transported about 32,000 migrants to New York City, while President Biden has been flying planeloads of migrants all around the country and oftentimes in the cover of night.”
However, the party that really deserves the blame here is the Biden administration, whose open border policy has led to the situation the country is currently facing. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sources recently told Fox News that the numbers of migrants at the southern order in December have already broken the record for monthly encounters, with more than 276,000 migrant encounters so far this month.
This surpasses the previous record of 269,735 encounters recorded in September. These high volumes have become a regular fixture this year, and CBP has been completely overwhelmed by the numbers of migrants entering the country.
