A recent analysis released by the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute has shown a drop of over 30 percent in abortion rates in North Carolina after the implementation of a pro-life law, which bans abortion after 12 weeks of pregnancy.
According to the report, an interactive chart enabling users to track monthly abortion statistics has found that North Carolina had 4,230 abortions in June. But the following month, the number dropped to 2,920.
Guttmacher Institute reported that North Carolina recorded 55 percent more abortions in the first six months of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. This data was supported by research conducted by the Society of Family Planning, which revealed that North Carolina clinics performed approximately 1,000 more abortions per month than they had in 2022. Based on that data, the state has one of the largest surges in the country after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
But the implementation of the 12-week pro-life law and the mandatory 72-hour waiting period in July led to fewer abortions in the state.
The news about the decline in abortion rate in North Carolina gained mixed reactions from different groups.
For instance, Planned Parenthood of South Atlantic in North Carolina criticized the report and argued that it violated “basic human rights.” Similarly, Occupy Democrats called the analysis “chilling” and labeled the 12-week abortion ban as a “far-right law,” insisting it was a reflection of “Donald Trump’s Republican-packed court.” (Related: North Carolina Republicans OVERRIDE Dem Gov. Calla Hales, who manages A Preferred Women’s Health Center with clinics in North Carolina and Georgia, shared how the restrictions have emotionally affected healthcare providers. “Having to turn away patients over and over again is truly just soul-crushing. We’re having to try our best to help patients, but they’re going through incredible financial and logistical difficulties to get here,” said Hales.
However, conservative news outlets like Not the Bee hailed the news on X as “outstanding.”
Tami Fitzgerald, the executive director of the North Carolina Values Coalition, also expressed optimism about the decline in abortion rates but stressed that there was still work to be done.
“After Dobbs, abortions in North Carolina were up 37 percent, so while 30 percent is an encouraging number, we still need to reduce abortions in North Carolina, as 90 percent of abortions are done before the twelfth week,” Fitzgerald said. “North Carolina needs to continue saving the lives of even more unborn babies while supporting and caring for their mothers.”
Under North Carolina’s pro-life law, abortions after 12 weeks could only be performed in cases of rape, incest or when the mother’s life is in danger. The law also requires that abortions must take place in hospitals for safety and accountability measures.
