During a segment on the Alex Jones show recently, Natural News founder/editor Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, made an observation that some listeners may have dismissed as ‘crazy’ or ‘impossible.’
In discussing a so-called ‘national red flag law’ which would empower local courts and law enforcement to seize guns from people deemed “mentally ill” and thus dangerous, Adams predicted that such a regulation would be greatly abused and serve as a primer for Leftist political leaders to bypass the Second Amendment.
What’s more, Adams said, the Left would actually claim that anyone who is a gun owner, by the definition alone, is ‘crazy’ and thus already mentally unstable, which would give authorities the excuse they need to take away guns from as many Americans as possible.
“The idea of a red flag law is so incredibly dangerous to our republic for this very reason,” Adams began. “Once it is passed, either at a state level or a federal level, if it is passed, Leftists will claim that anyone who wants to own a gun is mentally unstable.
“And therefore, anybody who wants to own a gun should not be able to own a gun because of red flag laws,” he continued. “So you see, this is a Catch 22. If you want to own a gun, you’re obviously mentally unstable and should not be allowed to own a gun and the only people who should be allowed to own guns are people who don’t want to own guns.”
Watch beginning around 1:35:
As it turns out, Adams’ assessment was spot-on.
Almost on cue, following a pair of shootings last week in El Paso and Dayton, here comes columnist Michael Daly at the Left-wing site The Daily Beast making the suggestion that anyone who wants to buy or own a gun in America should be subjected to a psychological evaluation “much like prospective cops and firefighters and many private employees do.”
“Expanded background checks would generally help but would not likely have prevented either of the most recent mass shooters from acquiring their weapons,” he writes.
“…[G]un-rights champions and gun-control advocates agree on one thing: Mental illness is a factor in mass shootings, with studies showing that about one-third of such shooters have severe untreated mental issues,” he continued.
Daly cited a two-year-old paper by Dr. John Caccavale, the executive director of the National Alliance of Professional Psychology Providers, in which he argued for “A Proposal To Integrate Mental Health Assessment Into Access to Guns.” (Related: Researchers: Crumbling family structures are contributing to mass shootings.)
The plan, Caccavale writes, is “consistent with protecting the constitutional right to acquire firearms while reducing gun violence by people who might be impaired and should be denied access to guns.”
According to the paper, the plan would work this way:
Any person who seeks to purchase a gun or any type of firearm that is legal under a statute will be required to obtain a standardized psychological assessment from a licensed doctoral level mental health specialist. The sole objective of the assessment is to identify factors that may be particularly related to an impairment that can be related to harm to oneself or others.”
Never mind that this is blatantly unconstitutional as it shreds the “infringement” clause of the Second Amendment. But psychology is anything but an exact science to begin with; how can you use an inexact science with inexact ‘indicators’ as any definitive measurement for mental health?
The fact is, as Adams noted, this proposal, too, would eventually be used by the Left to deny people guns based on the premise that you’d have to be crazy to want one in the first place.
